Non Traditional Wedding Dresses

Non Traditional Wedding DressesIf you just look at the fashion runways it’s easy to see; non traditional wedding dresses are everywhere you look. I remember looking at the bridal magazines when I got married, and being shocked at some of the non traditional wedding dresses that were featured there. I wondered who in their right mind wanted to get married in a wedding pantsuit instead of  a white wedding dress. It was only later on that I realized that having a big white wedding dress may not be everyone’s idea of perfect wedding attire. On your wedding day, you need to love what you are wearing, and sometimes brides prefer to wear some of the non traditional wedding dresses to make their wedding day fit their personality and style. So if a big white wedding dress isn’t really your style, here are some great options for non traditional wedding dresses.

Non Traditional Wedding Dresses - The Wedding Pantsuit

Perhaps the most shocking of all the non traditional wedding dresses for me is the wedding pantsuit. I mentioned before that I was not a big fan of it when I was planning my wedding, and to be completely honest, I’m still not a big fan.

But if you are like a lot of women out there who can’t stand to be in a dress or anything like it, then a wedding pantsuit might be a perfect choice for you. I guess this one really should not be in the non traditional wedding dresses category since they are pants, but it is definitely a non traditional choice. Most of the wedding pantsuits that I have seen are very tasteful. Wearing long flowing pants with pumps or strappy sandals can be really classy. But still to me, the wedding pantsuit is still #1 on my list of non traditional wedding dresses.

Non Traditional Wedding Dresses - The Short Dress

Nearly everyone is used to the idea that wedding dresses are long, covering the shoes or even tea length wedding dresses, which go the mid calf. But there are some non traditional wedding dresses that are much shorter than that, being knee length or above. If you’ve got the legs and a fashion taste that is different than most, then a shorter wedding dress might be for you. Just remember that on your wedding day you want to be classy and not trashy, so choose carefully.

Non Traditional Wedding Dresses - The Wedding Sundress

I’m putting the wedding sundress into the list of non traditional wedding dresses since they are not the typical big white wedding dress either. A wedding sundress is popular in beach weddings, other outdoor weddings, and more casual wedding ceremonies. If you are having an outdoor or a beach wedding, a long white wedding dress may not be smart, since it could get stained and dirty outside. Plus, a casual wedding can make a big traditional white wedding dress look out of place. One great benefit of a wedding sundress though is that you can find them at department stores and they cost a whole lot less than traditional wedding dresses and other non traditional wedding dresses.

Non Traditional Wedding Dresses - Colored Wedding Dresses

Personally, I consider this to be in the category of non traditional wedding dresses even though others may not. From a traditional standpoint, wedding dresses should be completely white as a symbol of purity for the bride. That wasn’t always the case though. One or two hundred years ago, wedding dresses came in an assortment of colors. Many brides today are choosing a white wedding dress with a splash of color (such as a sash or colored trim on the dress) to match their bridesmaids, or even a wedding dress that isn’t white at all, but their favorite color.

Whatever you decide to do, let your wedding reflect you and your future husband’s own unique tastes. Just because some family members or friends may not agree with your choice, it’s still your wedding and not theirs. Once the wedding is said and done, you don’t want to wish you had done something different.
